-> Ext2fsd v0.46
is released. |
|
Thanks to feiwei lei, Pedro Lopes, Mike Frysinger, Lisenbee
Jason, Andrey Rezvov, JinXXXX Kili Billl, Bart Thissen,
Gregory Mavropulo-Stolyarenko nguyen, Charles Wu, Tsukiyama
Norihiro, lommetennis, Luca Malossi, Vincent Crevot.
Modifications from V0.45:
Features implemented or bugs fixed:
1, ext3 journal check and replay implemented. If the journal is
not empty ext2fsd will replay the journal and make the file
system consistent as an ext2 file system.
2, flexible-inode-size supported. recent Linux are using 256-byte
inode that fails 0.45 and before to show all the files.
3, FIXME: 2 minor issues that mislead EditPlus. EditPlus is always
trying to open any file with directory_only flag set to judge
whether the target is a directory or file, when the file isn't
s
directory, the open request should be denied. But Ext2Fsd
0.45
and before doesn't. Another issue is that ext2 file time on
disk
has different precision against windows (1 second vs 100
nano
second), which causes EditPlus thinks the file is being changed.
4, FIXME: a severe bug (likely happen on win2k system) which cause
dirty caches missed and slow down the whole system.
5, many other minor changes: bulk block allocation/release, possible
inode allocation dead-loop when all inodes are used out, Ext2Mgr
win2k support, other performance improvements.
Features to be implemented in future:
1, LVM support
2, Documents improvement: clear and
elaborate
3, Performance improvement, code
optimization
4, EXT3 features support (journal,
htree)
5, Automatic check & update of
new versions
Since 0.38, Ext2fsd is much stable
even under heavy i/o
loads, both for reading and writing.
Performance and
stability are highly, improved especially
stability. A new
and strong era of Ext2Fsd in product shape is coming
:)
WARNINGS:
The driver may crash your system and
ruin your data
unexpectedly, since there might be software
conflicts
and I could only test it on some of the popular platforms.
You should use it with care and use it at your own risk!

| More than a year passed since last
release of version 0.25. There were too much things happened.
I even didn't get a chance (both for time and passion) on this
small project.
But there are still many people concerning it: submitting
patches, mailing advices, sharing experiences, encouraging,
etc.
There are too many people to whom I need owe my thanks.
Here I only introduce one: Ioannis Barkas <risc4all __at__
yahoo __dot__ com>.
He sent me dozens of mails and invaluable advices on
the project building. His great patience of checking the typo
errors of the webs and project files, is highly appreciated. I
also want to say sorry to him that I only answered one-tenth
of his mails.
Anyway, Ext2Fsd is going on it's way to a
new milestone: version 0.30 with a "nice" and
convenient management program.
It's much stable for normal works, with writing access enabled. I
use it on my own computer all along. But now the performance comes to be an issue when
there's heavy I/O operations. That's the thing to do next step.

| Thank you for all of your help and
concern on Ext2Fsd project.
Now the latest version 0.22a is much stable even for some
heavy i/o operations. :-). The progress seems a bit slower
(beyond your tolerance ?), but the small project is still on
it's way. And I'm very glad that more and more people
are concerned about it and trying to help to quick up the
development of Ext2Fsd.
You surely bring the lights to my and our dream of a stable
and fully functioned Ext3Fsd :-(

Great news for all: A writable driver is out after long coding and
endless debugging. Though it is not a stable one, we surely have
reasons to cheer for it. Wish you all enjoy it. The version 0.09 does not support ext3 yet. If your system is ext3/journal,
it will disable writing support.
Warning first: As I said before, It's not a stable version. It may crash your system and ruin your data.
You should use it with care and at your own risk!
I recommend you create a little ext2 partition as a swap between winnt and
linux or use an image file with the help of bosse's filedisk . You can write easily to the "swap" under
windows system, with little possibility of damaging your system data.
If you insist on useing ext2fsd on you system partition, you should run
e2fsck to make sure all the data are consistent.

I'm very glad that ext2fsd v0.07 is
out after so long silence and the little driver works smoothly on my
10G ext2 partition.
Next, ext2fsd will be expected to support writing. That is a
time-costing job. And further study of the winnt file system driver
internals and ext2/ext3 features must be done before this step. I
can't predict the time when such an ext2fsd 1.0 is out. But it's sure
that all your help and our efforts will accelerate the realization of
our dream.
Besides ext2fsd, I have to spare my limited free time to care for
other projects:
E2fsprogs:I'd rather rewrite the programs than porting it. I'll be
very delighted if you have better ideas. Now I've just finished the
initial version of Mke2fs. I'll release it soon. Everyone of you is sincerely
welcome to take over the other programs.
Ext2Sh is similar to debugfs, so I'll integrate it to E2fsprogs. I
have no enough time to care it and I'd rather not make the ugly codes
of my ext2ls (another project) public.
Any words from you will be appreciated. Thanks.

Those days I am entertained by other projects. So I have no
enough time and also an aspiring mood to care for ext2fsd.
The other reason, I find a severe bug, but the bug is due to the
construction of ext2fsd. To recover such bugs, it is necessary to
reconstruct ext2fsd......
